Legendary Wayne Gretzky, along with Team Canada captain Sidney Crosby, shed tears and prayed as they mourned the sudden passing of the former NHL goalie and beloved broadcaster of Hockey Night in Canada.

Legendary Wayne Gretzky, alongside Team Canada captain Sidney Crosby, was seen in tears as they paid heartfelt tribute to the late Greg Millen, whose sudden passing at the age of 67 has left a profound void in the hockey community. Millen, a former NHL goaltender turned beloved broadcaster, was a fixture on Hockey Night in Canada, where his passionate commentary and deep knowledge of the game made him a fan favorite for decades.

Players, fans, and fellow broadcasters across the country have come together to remember not just the professional, but the person—someone who gave his heart to the sport long after his skates were hung up. Gretzky described Millen as “a true gentleman who lived and breathed the game,” while Crosby added that Millen’s insights “helped generations fall in love with hockey.”

Millen’s death has sparked an outpouring of tributes on social media, with many sharing personal stories of his kindness, humor, and unmatched dedication to hockey. As the nation grieves, his legacy lives on through the memories he created both on the ice and behind the mic. The hockey world has lost not just a voice, but a soul.

Former NHL goalie and Hockey Night in Canada broadcaster Greg Millen passed away at the age of 67, news that has sent shockwaves throughout the hockey world.

Some truly sad news is coming out of the hockey world today as it was revealed that former NHL goalie Greg Millen died at 67.

During his career, he played for a plethora of teams including the Pittsburgh Penguins, Hartford Whalers, St. Louis Blues, Quebec Nordiques, and even the Chicago Blackhawks.

Greg Millen remembered by the NHL

Following his career in the NHL, he worked with CBC and Hockey Night in Canada where once again, he was beloved by coworkers.

Today on social media, the NHL Alumni account paid tribute to Millen, noting his contributions to the game.

It is with heavy hearts we share the sudden passing of Greg Millen today. He played 14 seasons between the pipes in the National Hockey League for six teams: the Pittsburgh Penguins, Hartford Whalers, St. Louis Blues, Quebec Nordiques, Chicago Blackhawks, and Detroit Red Wings. Over his NHL career, Millen appeared in more than 600 regular-season games.

Overall, this is very sad news, especially as Millen leaves behind a wife, four children, and grandchildren.

After retiring from professional play, Millen transitioned to broadcasting. He began by covering the Ottawa Senators during their inaugural season in 1992-93. His broadcasting career includes roles as a colour commentator for CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada and the NHL on Sportsnet, where he worked alongside Hockey Night in Canada Greats Bob Cole, Harry Neale, Don Cherry, Ron MacLean and Jim Hughson. Greg worked with our NHL Alumni Executive Director Glenn Healy where both served as analysts and were part of the same Hockey Night in Canada broadcast team.

He was known and loved by all in the broadcasting world! Millen has covered three Olympic Games, two World Cups of Hockey, twelve Stanley Cup finals, and twelve NHL All-Star games.

Our heart goes out to the Millen family during this very difficult and emotionally distressing time.
