Liverpool remain contenders to sign Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz this summer, despite strong interest from Premier League rivals Manchester City, according to journalist Graeme Bailey.
While the two clubs are believed to be at the front of the queue, Wirtz has yet to signal a preference to join either or remain at Leverkusen, where he is under contract until June 2027.
It is believed a deal for the 21-year-old would cost around £87m, which would make him Liverpool’s record signing, surpassing the £85m they spent on Darwin Nunez in 2022.

According to Bailey, Wirtz has no shortage of admirers across Europe amid an impressive spell with Leverkusen and his emergence as ‘the best No.10 in world football’.
Wirtz was instrumental in Leverkusen’s historic Bundesliga campaign last season, helping Xabi Alonso’s side lift their first-ever German league title while registering 23 goal contributions in 32 appearances.
The 21-year-old has been just as impressive this season, scoring 15 goals and providing 13 assists in 39 games across all competitions.
Liverpool are anticipating a busy second summer under Arne Slot, with a new number nine high on their agenda amid Nunez’s uncertain future at the club.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the Uruguayan forward could have potential suitors in Saudi Arabia after interest was registered during the January window.
